You’ve heard of herbal medicine, but what is it really? Maybe your grandmother gave you a cup of herbal tea when you were sick, or maybe you’ve just heard about it somewhere — a movie, among friends, some health guru — but what exactly is herbal medicine? Where does it come from? And what, if anything, is it good for?

Indeed, herbal medicine can sometimes feel so commonplace that we no longer question it! When we do think about what herbal medicine is, it can be hard to define. Like all things, herbal medicine has a long and rich tradition reaching back to the Stone Age. Let’s dive in and take a look!

Clarifying Misconceptions

First, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Is herbal medicine a form of pseudoscience nonsense that only old people believe in? That’s an easy one — no! Humans have existed on Earth for tens of thousands of years. Throughout that time, we have had fevers, broken bones, and any other illness that you can think of, in one shape or another! Nature’s plants, fruits, and flowers have been there to help us get back on our feet (1). Modern medicine, on the other hand, is a relatively new invention, and while we are grateful for it, pharmaceutical medicines are not the only means of improving our health.

History & Traditions of Herbal Medicine

The use of plants for medicinal purposes comes to us in the written record from the earliest civilizations. From Egypt to China, mainland Europe, and the islands of the Mediterranean Sea, herbal remedies have been a part of them all! The history is clear — wherever people have joined together to live with one another, herbal medicine has been used (2).

In Korea, traditional herbal medicine is known as hanyak and traces its history to the founding of the nation. In the founding myth, a tiger and a bear both wish to become humans; they are tasked with eating only medicinal plants for 100 days to have their wishes granted. This is to say that for Koreans, herbal medicine isn’t just an alternative or a trend — it’s a way of life. With our own Korean roots, The Plug is committed to continuing the long tradition of clean plant-based medicine.

To say that herbal medicine has been used for as long as humans have been around is not to claim all herbal medicine is the same. That is why at The Plug, we have chosen a specifically researched blend of herbs to aid in liver recovery. Chewing on one type of root might stop a headache, while chewing on the leaves of a different plant might make you see things that aren’t there…

Trial and error, in other words, had been a big part of how we knew what worked and what was better left alone. But like with wireless internet and WIFI (yes, they’re separate things!), humans haven’t always known why something works, only that it did. Today, with modern science, we have a much better understanding.

Backed By Science

A common misconception is that herbal and pharmaceutical medicine are unrelated. But this could not be further from the truth! Did you know, for instance, that many commonplace drugs come from plants? The active ingredients in plants like salicylic acid (which comes from willow bark) is what has resulted in the creation of aspirin (1). Taxol, from the Pacific yew tree, is utilized in cancer therapy (1). These are just some of the examples that showcase the continued inclusion of herbal medicine in modern healthcare, something that the team at S.N. College of Pharmacy, Jaunpur heavily notes (1).

Herbal medicine and pharmaceutical medicine do not have to be opposites! In many cultures, they continue to exist alongside one another. The key is knowing what is backed by science and what is not. When we can have all-natural products, without the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and all of the therapeutic effects of modern medicine, that is the best of both worlds. We at The Plug look forward to seeing how both sides of the medicine coin develop in the coming years. What about you, PlugFAM?
